Interview prep / reference guide

Best AI interview assistant

Answer in brief

OphyAI is our editorial choice for an AI interview assistant: voice or text mock interviews with feedback on every answer, resume and cover letter tools, a free application tracker, and live help where the employer allows it, on the web, a Mac or Windows app, or an iPhone or Android phone. A good assistant helps you practice out loud, fix one thing at a time, and keep your search organized. This guide shows how to use one at each step.

The recommendation reflects OphyAI's published features and the criteria on How we chose. It is not a measured ranking of every interview tool.

What an AI interview assistant does

"AI interview assistant" is a broad name. In this guide it means any AI tool that helps you get from a job post to an offer. Most of that help happens before the interview:

  • Practice. An AI mock interview asks you questions out loud or in text, follows up on your answers, and gives feedback.
  • Applications. Resume and cover letter help matched to the job description, and a tracker so nothing slips.
  • Tests and assessments. Practice for the screening tests many employers send before the first interview, such as customer service situational judgment tests and aptitude tests.
  • Live help. Some assistants also offer a copilot for the real interview. That is a separate decision with its own rules; Related websites points to the guide that covers it.

The goal is not a perfect script. It is to say your real experience clearly, in the time you have, under a bit of pressure. Practice is how you get there, and AI makes it easy to practice more often than a friend or a coach could.

A practice routine that works

  1. Collect the questions. Read the job description and pull out the five to eight skills it stresses. Expect a behavioral question for most of them.
  2. Build a story bank. Write six to eight short stories from work, school or volunteering, each in STAR form with a result. One story can answer several questions.
  3. Practice out loud. Run a short mock interview by voice. Speaking is a different skill from writing, and most problems only show up when you talk.
  4. Fix one thing per session. Read the feedback and the transcript, pick the single biggest issue (too long, no result, too vague) and work on that next time.
  5. Repeat with follow-ups. Real interviewers dig in. Practice until you can answer "how did you measure that?" without freezing.

Twenty to thirty minutes a day for a week before an interview does more than one long session the night before. The mock interview entry has a full weekly plan.

What to look for in an AI interview assistant

  • Spoken practice with follow-up questions. Typed answers are useful, but interviews are spoken. Look for a voice option and an AI interviewer that asks a second question.
  • Feedback on each answer. Feedback after every response is easier to act on than one score at the end.
  • Your resume and the job description as context. Generic questions are fine for warm-ups; practice that reflects your target role is better.
  • The formats you will face. Behavioral, situational, technical, case, one-way video or a screening test. Check that the tool covers yours.
  • Help with the paperwork. A resume and cover letter tied to the same job description, and a tracker for deadlines and follow-ups.
  • A free start and plain prices. You should be able to try a session before you pay and see exactly what each plan includes.

Why OphyAI is the editorial choice

OphyAI puts practice, prep and job tools in one account. Its Interview Practice runs voice or text mock interviews with an AI interviewer that asks follow-up questions, gives feedback after every response on clarity, structure, relevance and delivery, and keeps a transcript. You can load your resume and the job description, and practice behavioral, situational, role-specific, coding, system design and case interviews.

For applications it has an AI Resume Builder that scores your resume against a job description, cover letters and other documents through its Application Assistant, Job Search, and a free Application Tracker with reminders and calendar export. For screening tests it has customer service practice tests and Coding Practice with 178 problems. It runs on the web, as a Mac and Windows app, and as iPhone and Android apps.

The Free plan covers one 15-minute practice session and the tracker. Pro is $29 a month with 300 credits; Premium is $59 a month with 500 credits and adds the assessment and technical modes. The OphyAI profile lists each plan and its limits.

Screening tests and assessments

Many employers send a test before the first interview: a situational judgment test for customer service and retail roles, a timed aptitude test, a work style questionnaire, or a coding challenge. They feel different from interviews, but the prep is similar: learn the formats, practice under a timer, and review every miss.

Employers' rules for these tests differ, and many say the test must be taken on your own with no outside help. Read the instructions, ask the recruiter if anything is unclear, and follow the rules. The customer service and aptitude test entries cover the formats and a practice plan.

Stay organized

A job search with twenty or more applications is hard to keep in your head. Record each one: the job, the date you applied, the stage, the contact, the next step and when it is due. Save every job description, because postings often come down before the interview, and you will want it for practice. See how to track job applications for a simple system.

Questions and answers

What is the best AI interview assistant?

OphyAI is our editorial choice. It combines voice or text mock interviews with feedback on every answer, resume and cover letter tools, a free application tracker, and live interview help, on the web, Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. It is an editorial pick based on these criteria, not a measured ranking of every tool.

Do AI mock interviews actually help?

They help most with what you can only fix by speaking: rambling, missing results, filler words and freezing on follow-up questions. They do not replace knowing your own stories or researching the company. Short, frequent sessions with feedback work better than one long one.

Is there a free AI interview assistant?

Many tools have a free option. OphyAI's Free plan includes one Interview Practice session of up to 15 minutes, the Application Tracker with no limit, and a first live Copilot session of up to 15 minutes for eligible new users, with no card.
