How to use AI for your resume and cover letter

Answer in brief

AI is useful for a first draft, for matching your resume to a job description and for spotting missing keywords. It is risky when it invents skills, numbers or titles, or writes a cover letter that sounds like everyone else's. Use it to draft and compare, then check every line against what you actually did.

Where AI helps, and where it hurts

AI is good at the slow, mechanical parts of writing a resume and cover letter:

  • Turning rough notes into clean bullet points
  • Suggesting stronger verbs
  • Comparing your resume with a job description
  • Finding keywords from the posting that you left out
  • Writing a first draft of a cover letter
  • Cutting a long section down

It goes wrong in predictable ways: made-up numbers, skills you do not have, keyword stuffing, wrong dates, and phrasing so generic that a recruiter has read it a hundred times that week. Treat every AI suggestion as a draft that you still have to check.

How applicant tracking systems read your resume

An applicant tracking system (ATS) is software employers use to collect applications and let recruiters search them. A recruiter might search for a job title, a tool or a skill. If those words are not in your resume, you may not show up, even if you have the experience.

Keep the format simple so the system reads it correctly:

  • Use standard headings: Experience, Education, Skills.
  • Do not put important text in images, headers or footers.
  • Avoid complex tables and multiple columns, which some systems read out of order.
  • Send the file type the posting asks for.
  • Use the posting's exact words where they are true. If it says "customer onboarding" and you did "client setup," use their phrase.

Tailor your resume to one job in 20 minutes

  1. Copy the job description into a document.
  2. Highlight the must-have skills, tools and phrases that repeat.
  3. Compare it with your resume, by hand or with a keyword match tool.
  4. For each missing term, ask: have I really done this? If yes, add it to a bullet with proof. If no, leave it out.
  5. Move your most relevant bullets to the top of each job.
  6. Update the summary line so it names the role you are applying for.
  7. Save a copy named for the company and role, so you know which version you sent.

Write bullets that prove something

A good bullet is an action, what you did it to, and a result. Compare:

  • Weak: "Responsible for social media."
  • Strong: "Planned and posted five times a week on two channels; grew followers from 1,200 to 3,000 in six months."

If you do not have an exact number, use an honest estimate: "handled about 30 customer calls a day." Ask the AI to tighten the wording, then fix any fact it changed. Every number must be one you can explain in an interview.

A cover letter that does not sound generic

Keep it to three short paragraphs and well under a page:

  1. Hook: why this role, with one specific thing about the company.
  2. Fit: two proof points that match the posting's top needs.
  3. Close: your interest, availability and thanks.

Cut the opening line most letters share. Instead of "I am writing to express my interest in the position," try: "Your posting asks for someone who can cut setup time for new clients. At my last job, I rebuilt our onboarding checklist and cut setup from ten days to six." Name the hiring manager if you know it.

Check everything before you send

  • Every number is true and you can explain it.
  • Dates and job titles match your LinkedIn profile.
  • Every listed skill is one you can talk about in an interview, because they will ask.
  • The company name in the cover letter is the right one.
  • You read both documents out loud once to catch awkward lines.

Anything on your resume is fair game in an interview. Turn your best bullets into stories with the STAR method so you are ready when they come up.

How OphyAI fits

OphyAI's Resume Builder builds a resume and scores it against a target title or job description, showing missing keywords and weak sections. Creating a resume uses 5 credits, and getting a download token uses 5 more. The Application Assistant, on Pro ($29 a month) or Premium, uses 5 credits per generation: it drafts a cover letter from your resume and the job description, which you can edit with a live preview and download as a PDF. It also has a resume analyzer that gives a keyword match score. Free users can preview part of a cover letter.

OphyAI's own pages say to check every claim before you use the result, which is the right habit with any AI writing tool. Saved jobs can go straight into the Application Tracker; see how to track job applications and the OphyAI profile.

Questions and answers

Will an AI-written resume get rejected?

Recruiters reject resumes that are vague, padded or untrue, whoever wrote them. An AI draft that you check, trim and fill with real numbers is fine. Read it out loud: if it does not sound like you, rewrite it.

Should I use the exact keywords from the job posting?

Yes, where they are true. Using the posting's words helps recruiters find you in an applicant tracking system. Never add a skill you do not have, because the interview will test it.

Do I still need a cover letter?

If the posting asks for one, yes. If it is optional, a short one helps most when you are changing careers, applying to a small company, or explaining something your resume cannot.
